There are points in life that will make you think of where you stand, and whether you like being there. You may need to make some improvements, or you might have achieved your goals early on. Whether you stand in a good or bad place right now, it’s important that you are aware of your current position so that you can make some adjustments along the way.
Here are five things to ask yourself:
Can you do your job forever?
Your career plays a major role in your life and your finances. If it’s a job you enjoy or would like to keep doing for a long time, then you are in good hands. This means you have some sense of stability in your career. This can also mean it’s time to ask for that raise, because in some industries, venturing out to other companies is the only way to increase your salary. And if you don’t plan to do that, at least open the conversation in your current company. Tell them you would like to stay in the company, but that you would like a raise to support your growing needs.
What would prompt you to change your status?
This does not have to be about work. This can be about different aspects of your life, such as your personal relationships. Ask yourself if you’re happy to be in the relationship you have right now. And if you are, are you happy enough to move on to the next stage? Would marriage or having kids be a part of your future plans? What if it’s the opposite? Do you want to break up with your partner?
Either way, start making plans now because life changes can be some of the most expensive aspects of your life. The money you spend now on self-care items such as Korean sunscreen may need to come from another source of income if you are planning to buy an expensive engagement ring. On the other hand, if you plan to be single soon, you may be looking at some freed-up funds, but make sure you don’t spend it frivolously.
What do you do outside of work?
There is no right or wrong answer to this, but the answer will give you an idea of how enriching your life is. Do you have hobbies? Do you have enough free time to do something you love, or do you just go straight to sleep, tired from your long workday? If you’re in a stressful job that takes over most of your life, perhaps you’ll want to consider cutting back on your work hours to spend more time with your family. The last thing you want is to wake up one day with your family feeling like you’re a stranger to them.
Do you have a support system?
No matter how bad things get, is there a group of people you trust to be by your side? Do you feel that security of having them around, even when you’re not physically together? If you don’t have this kind of security in your life, maybe you need to start making room for more meaningful connections. You will need a support system when things get tough, and they will, so you should work on establishing this now.
No matter where you are in life right now, know that you can always make some adjustments to steer yourself in a better direction. But first, you have to be aware of your current course.
